WRITING PEER TUTORS

Writing and Learning Services

Huron is unique to post-secondary institutions in Canada. With the aim to redefine Liberal Arts education, Huron is creating a university experience unlike any other that prioritizes ethical leadership and community engagement, as much as the pursuit of academic achievement.

As the founding college of Western University, since 1863, Huron has remained strategically small to best serve the needs of its students.  We provide an elite, yet accessible, education, because every student with the passion and work ethic to positively change our world deserves to access the knowledge to understand it and the skills to shape it. Huron’s mission is to develop Leaders with Heart from all backgrounds and foster a vibrant and inclusive community and prepare students to be engaged citizens who transform the sectors they work within.

SUMMARY:

Huron’s Writing & Learning Services is looking to hire writing peer tutors for the incoming 2024-2025 academic year. This role is a year-long commitment. We are looking for individuals who are academically motivated and well-rounded as well as have a drive to help others achieve their academic goals. This position has a flexible schedule that works around your own. It also offers an amazing opportunity for personal and professional development.

The Writing Centre aims to assist students across all year levels and programs in any stage of their writing process. This can range from brainstorming, rough drafts, final drafts, and final read-throughs. We also assist in citation concerns across the Chicago, MLA, and APA styles.

The ideal candidate will be a well-rounded, high-achieving individual, who has great interpersonal and communication skills as they will be working one on one with other students. They will also need to work through a collaborative lens as our goal as tutors is to help others improve upon their own writing and not edit out their own voice. Previous experience working or engaging with the Huron community is considered an asset but is not a requirement. The ability to work in high-stress situations would also be beneficial as students may come in with quickly approaching deadlines. Excellent time management and organizational skills are also considered an asset for success in this role.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Tutoring students to help them improve their writing and communication skills.
  • Delivering introductory talks to first-year students to familiarize them with the tutoring options available to them.
  • Participating in training sessions
  • Attending orientation meetings, regular team meetings, and professional development workshops
  • Participating in vibrant, productive conversations about key course content
  • Developing content for the centre
  • Attending orientation meetings, regular team meetings, and professional development workshops
  • Providing support in other duties of the Writing and Learning Services as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Undergraduate students at Huron are preferred.
  • Proficient in at least one of the major citation styles.
  • Applicants must be able to work in Canada.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and intercultural skills.
  • Willing to engage in ongoing professionalization.
  • Comfortable working in-person or online.
